Once again, Dennis Kucinich succeeds in telling it like it is. Notice the slight looks of surprise as the delegates slowly start tuning in to his ballsy speech. This is so Jimmy Stewart!
Meet Tom Valick, the Governor of Iowa, a man who Robert Reich has endorsed as a candidate for presidency should the nation actually enter into what Reich calls an “era of new progressivism.” According to Reich, the widening income gap will necessitate one of two outcomes: “snap back” or “snap break.”
The former, more hopeful outcome will emerge as a result of progressive politics (i.e. when elites and the middle-class begin caring about the poor by electing politicians who care about the poor). The latter will emerge if progressive action doesn’t take place. Cultural warfare will be replaced by “real class warfare,” as the anxiety-ridden working-poor displace their anxieties onto what Reich calls “targets of animosity.” That is, swayed by the vitriolic anti-liberal rhetoric of far Right, Limbaugh-like demagogues, the underclassed will lash out against intellectual elites (like Reich himself, ironically), Hollywood, Jews, immigrants. You get the point.
Rather than tune into tonight’s episode of Lost, try watching Reich’s talk here. I love him.
